A beautiful piece of late 18th-century history. This solid walnut tripod candlestand (circa 1770–1790) boasts classic Chippendale/Federal proportions and features a highly desirable hand-turned dish-top rim.
In the 1700s, a table of this size (21" diameter by 28" height) was specifically designed as a portable parlor accent, perfect for holding a pair of candles, a book, or a tea service. The raised lip was meticulously carved from a thick two-board walnut top on a lathe to prevent items from sliding off.
Features & Construction Details:
  • True Period Construction: The underside reveals hand-sawn surfaces, a beautifully aged block mechanism, and primitive, deeply oxidized textures underneath the feet that only come with centuries of rest on historic floors.
  • Warm Rich Patina: The solid walnut features a gorgeous grain pattern with a deep, reflective, glass-like finish that highlights its incredible age.
Condition & Historic Structural Repairs:
This table has been loved and used for over 240 years, resulting in a wonderful, honest character and a clear survival story. It features old, highly professional, rock-solid structural repairs that only add to its historic charm:
  • The Base: Two of the tripod feet have clean, ancient grain fractures that were tightly mended generations ago. One leg is reinforced underneath with an early blacksmith-style steel/iron brace. The table stands incredibly solid and sturdy.
  • The Top: The original two-board top has a historic shrinkage split along the grain line that was beautifully repaired long ago using professional wooden sliver inserts ("dutchman" style), leaving it flush, stable, and smooth.
  • Mechanism & Latch: The table top tilts and locks securely in place. The original brass catch remains intact, but the small exterior release push-pin is no longer present. to release and tilt the top, a small object or tool must be inserted and used to push up through the center aperture of the brass catch.
This is not a modern reproduction; it is a genuine period antique with an extraordinary soul. Perfect as an elegant, functional end table next to an armchair or as a standout accent piece in a colonial or transitional home.
Dimensions:
  • Top Diameter: 21 inches
  • Height: 28 inches
